An Icaro is a song channeled from Spirit and sung during ceremony. Although the word originated from one particular jungle tribe, the Shipibo, it has spread throughout the Amazon and Andes. Each Icaro carries its own intention. Some are for opening, some are for protection, some are for visions, and some are even to aid in vomiting. The Icaros themselves originated as gifts from Plant Spirits that were taught by the plants to Shaman in Plant Diets.
Icaros are either whistled or sung, and can be expressed in any language. Shaman generally sing in a spirit dialect that is a mixture of their native language, Spanish, and different evocative sounds. Icaros represent a system of communication between Shaman, Spirit and the participants in the ceremony. Shaman believe that every living thing has an Icaro and that these Icaros can be learned.
The singing of icaros is sometimes accompanied by the chakapa, rattle of bundled leaves that is used to carry the rhythm of the ceremony. The shaman will use his chakapa to direct energy and the icaros, as well as send away dark or unwanted energies.
